WWII Movies was created by JackKnife!UK

I'm posting this link here so spark some conversation about the best and most worth WWII films. What are your favourites? And why? This is IMDBs list:
www.imdb.com/list/ls052642566/

I haven't seen all the movies on this list, some I really enjoy, but some I wonder why they are there (like Pan's Labyrinth). Also while I love Shindler's list, I question it's position at the top of the list.

Any suggestions on how to improve the list? Or what about omissions? What films should be on the list that aren't? Perhaps a better list would be to split it into two lists. One pre 1990 releases and one post 1990 releases. What is sad to me is the minimal representation of Russian films. They did many but for some reason the list doesn't have them.

Looking forward to hearing some excellent replies.

Regarding the rating, each to their own, but my top movie is Kelly's Heroes. And they can really add some of these game trailers to the list there, just like movies.

That's a kick ass trailer Winbean. Visceral, everybody dies! By the way, growing up I used to sing the song they have as the soundtrack for this as I learned it as a young boy, it was a very popular Russian antiwar children's song. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_There_Always_Be_Sunshine

Kelly's Heroes is on the IMDB list I posted but there are few other comedies there as they seem to be among the rarest of the WWII Genres.

Talking with Relik before I made this post, we determined that "Best WWII Movie" is too wide a designation. Of course people can compose a list but there are so many sub genres to be found that its hard to include all the good ones. Here's a few of those sub genres we looked at.

WWII Movie Subgenres
1 The Battle movie. These are movies that explore a single battle, through single or multiple viewpoints. Examples: Midway (1976 and 2019), Battle of the Bulge (1965), A Bridge too Far (1977) etc...

2 The Mission Movie. A group is put together to accomplish a single mission. Saving Private Ryan (1998), The Dam Busters (1955), Where Eagles Dare (1968), The Guns of Navarone (1961) etc... Maybe here you could include The Heist Movie where a group of soldiers finds out about treasure and seeks it out like Kelly's Heroes (1970).

3 The Escape/Prison Movie. Again self explanatory. Examples include: The Great Escape (1963), Stalag 17 (1953), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Victory (1981) etc...

4 The Holocaust Movie. This is mostly self explanatory. Examples include: Schindler's List (1993), Life is Beautiful (1997), The Pianist (2002), Sophie's Choice (1982) etc...

5 The "Trying to stay out of the war but get dragged in movie" Examples include: Casablanca (1942), Empire of the Sun (1987), The English Patient (1996) etc...

6 The Assassination Movie. These are where people join a mission simply to kill or kidnap important leaders. Examples include: The Dirty Dozen (1967), The Eagle Has Landed (1976), Inglourious Basterds (2009)

7 The Submarine Movie. Again another common theme which is self explanatory. Examples include: Das Boot (1981) and U-571 (2000)

8 So many other sub genres too. Like the Bomber Crew, The Fighter Pilot (s), The Disillusioned with War Soldier or Antiwar Movie like Die Abenteuer des Werner Holt (1965).

Just looking at this makes the idea of a making a comprehensive list seem silly.

Consider this: while I was chatting with THAT BASTARD one day XD, you know, our beloved AUSSIE, we got into a discussion about movies. He tossed out a movie recommendation for me, 'Unbroken,' by the way, which turned out to be quite a gem. Now, here's the thing, it's set in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, and I couldn't help but think that the Japanese warden, Mutsuhiro Watanabe, could have been portrayed a tad differently. I mean, he looked more like a Japanese Backstreet Boys member than the imposing figure I'd imagined. But, hey, that's just my two cents! Or take 'Patton' for example, folks say they didn't quite nail his voice or how he flaunted all those medals at the beginning of the movie - the top gripe about it. But personally, I didn't find it bothersome at all. We could even label these movies as 'Historical Misrepresentation' just for kicks.

I want to point out 'Saving Pvt. Ryan' is officially classified as a drama. Now, here's the twist – when I think of 'Saving Pvt. Ryan,' I'm picturing action, so if someone's eager to add 'Saving Pvt. Ryan' to their collection, surprise! You'd need to check under the 'drama' section. And let's say you've got a massive digital movie library, and you're eager to watch it again it's under drama.

One aspect that crossed my mind while watching these World War II movies is the notable misrepresentation of tanks. Similar to the movie 'Patton,' there's room for a special label, let's call it 'Anachronistic Films,' catering to enthusiasts like me who can be a bit particular about historical accuracy. Sometimes it's hard to resist a critical eye! XD

How about films that aren't directly about World War II but feature significant figures from that era? Take 'Operation Finale,' for instance, a movie about the capture of Nazi Adolf Eichmann. Or 'Death of Stalin,' a comedic take on the power struggles in the Soviet Union following Stalin's demise. And JackKnife!UK, you might want to give this one a go; it's a fantastic comedy that even W.McL enjoys!

When it comes to heist movies, the closest thing that brings to mind the vibe of 'Kelly's Heroes' for me is 'Battlefield Bad Company.' While it's not set in World War II, it boasts great characters, an engaging story, and that same kind of clean, good-humored fun you'd find in 'Kelly's Heroes.'

Yeah misrepresentation in WWII movies is annoying on so many levels: perpetuating untrue historical details and anachronisms are frustrating to see especially as there is so much more information available nowadays that to show things in the most realistic way shouldn't be that hard. It definitely deserves it's own genre.

The Figures from That Era could also be a good one. I haven't watched Operation Finale but would like to now it's been recommended. The Boys From Brazil might be a good on on that list but that really expands it to include so much more after the war, but maybe it is more of a fantasy flick.

I did watch the death of Stalin - twice even! It is that funny that I've watched it deliberately with two different groups of people. I think it nails what those around a cold blooded despot actually think and how they would behave if their leader died. It was no lie that all those officials feared and hated him, and who wouldn't as he seemed to execute or imprison people almost whimsically. The Writer of the Death of Stalin, Armando Iannucci, is brilliant. I'd recommend watching his series "The Thick of It" and the TV movie, "In The Loop"
